Feather Wallet Virus? It's a False Positive

Short answer: it's a false positive. Feather Wallet is a legitimate, open-source Monero wallet, but antivirus tools — especially Windows Defender — sometimes flag it as a virus, trojan, or “potentially unwanted” file. This guide explains why that happens, how to verify your download is authentic, and how to safely restore Feather from quarantine without turning off your protection.

Is Feather Wallet a Virus?

No. Feather Wallet is a free, open-source Monero wallet whose full source code is published on GitHub for anyone to audit. It is lightweight, privacy-focused, and built to work over Tor. When Windows Defender, Avast, or another scanner reports something like “feather wallet virus detected” or flags it as a trojan, that is an antivirus false positive — not evidence that the wallet is malicious.

Why Does Antivirus Flag Feather Wallet?

  • Low reputation score. Niche, open-source binaries don't have the download volume that builds “reputation” in Microsoft's telemetry, so heuristic engines treat them with suspicion.
  • Crypto & networking behavior. Wallets use encryption and connect to the Monero network (and Tor), patterns that generic heuristics sometimes associate with malware.
  • Miner overlap. Because malware has historically bundled crypto miners, anything in the Monero ecosystem gets extra scrutiny from AV vendors.
  • Unsigned or newly released builds. A fresh release that isn't yet widely seen can trip “this file is not commonly downloaded” warnings until reputation catches up.

How to Make Sure Your Feather Download Is Safe

A false positive is harmless — but a fake wallet from an unofficial mirror is not. Before you trust any copy of Feather, verify it.

1) Only download from the official site

Get Feather from featherwallet.org only. Avoid mirrors, rehosted installers, forum links, and video-description downloads.

2) Verify the PGP signature or hash

  • Feather publishes a signed hashes.txt and the developer's PGP key. Verify the signature with GnuPG (or Gpg4win/Kleopatra on Windows).
  • Or compare the file's SHA256 to the official value. On Windows PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\feather.exe -Algorithm SHA256.
  • Feather's own signature-verification guide walks through every step.

If verification passes, the flag is a false positive and the file is safe to keep. If verification fails, delete it — do not whitelist an unverified file.

Restore Feather From Windows Defender Quarantine

If Defender already quarantined a verified Feather download:

  1. Open Windows SecurityVirus & threat protectionProtection history.
  2. Select the Feather detection, click Actions, then Allow or Restore.
  3. Optionally add a narrow folder exclusion for Feather's directory so it stops being re-flagged (Virus & threat protection settings → ExclusionsAdd or remove exclusions).

Keep the exclusion as narrow as possible — a single dedicated folder — and leave real-time protection on everywhere else. That is far safer than disabling your antivirus. Is Feather Wallet Safe to Use?

Yes, provided you download it from the official site and verify it. Feather is one of the most trusted lightweight Monero wallets, particularly among privacy-focused and Tor users. As with any hot wallet, follow good hygiene:

  • Write your 25-word seed on paper or steel — never a screenshot or cloud note.
  • Keep large balances in cold storage; use Feather for everyday spending.
  • Keep the wallet updated from the official site only.

The Bottom Line

A “Feather Wallet virus” warning is almost always a false positive caused by antivirus heuristics, not real malware. Download Feather only from featherwallet.org, verify the signature or hash, and — if it was quarantined — restore it and add a narrow exclusion. Verified and installed correctly, Feather is a safe, open-source way to hold Monero.

Educational information only. Always verify wallet binaries from official sources before whitelisting, and keep your operating system and security tools up to date.
